Doggy Artist strikes again!

This last week we had the reoccurring visit from the doggy artist. His name is Peanut and he obviously has a passion for paint when I am not looking. This time the little stinker couldn’t deny he had been the one who committed the crime.. he was sporting the evidence of his artistly passion! The guilty look as I snapped the photos cracked me up. Anyway, you’ll never know what is going to happen around the studio here. He is the sweetest little yorkie.. but should have been named Picasso!

Life-Changing Weekend-hiv aids orphans in africa crisis

I had the most incredible weekend. My husband and I were priveleged and honored to meet Dave and Jean Ohlerking. The Ohlerking’s are founders of the organization Children’s Cup. There was one thing I just really loved about them–is they are so intense! This couple has a passion to help the hurting and to share God’s love to those that many of us in the western world has turned a blind eye to.

Children’s Cup works to feed, clothe and educate Aids Orphans in Africa. They establish Care Point Centers . Currently Children’s Cup has 12 Care Points in Africa and are looking to
continually establish more centers around the world, as well as to continue helping in Africa.

Children’s Cup APPROACH:

It takes a comprehensive approach to the orphan and vulnerable children (OVC) issue and requires treating the whole child. A CarePoint becomes a central point for providing the multiple services necessary. Physical needs are met by providing a meal and vitamins daily. Immunizations and voluntary HIV/AIDS testing are offered. Volunteers teach HIV/AIDS education. Children’s Cup invests in these children mentally by making preschool, basic literacy programs and job training available. Social support is important, teaching life skills through a youth outreach program. Kids’ Clubs on Saturdays give extra support and moral education. Extra care and attention is given to orphan-headed households.

Dave and Jean are doing an incredible work to help these precious children. Aids has left over 60,000 orphans in Swaziland alone and the number is expected to rise. These little children are exploited in ways that are humanly unimaginable. It’s not uncommon for children as young as 2 years old to be raped. My heart broke as we talked at a local restaurant for hours. Within moments, I knew that this was a global problem- not just an africa problem , or an aids problem..and then I realized, this was my problem. Many of you have come to know me through my art, then you knew my heart to help and give back. I have to do something to stand up for the innocent and defenseless ones who can’t take care of themselves alone.

Original Painting or Giclee Print on Canvas?

I just recently recieved this wonderful email from a would-be collector wanting to know exactly what is the difference between purchasing an original vs. a giclee on canvas. I thought this information might be valuable to you.

Hi Martin-Thanks so much for your email. I appreciate your interest in my art. Hereare the pro’s and con’s of prints on canvas vs. an original painting.

Obviously an original painting is considered an investment that shouldappreciate each year as an artist continues to mature and expand their artcareer. Originals are more “collectable” meaning they would be the bestreturn for your money if an artist were to be later discovered as one of thegreat masters of their time. ( Like Pollock, Van Gogh, Matisse or Picasso)Resale value of artwork is much higher if you own an original.

Now while Iam not going to say I am the next Picasso, my career has been advancing and my work is becoming more valuable, causing higher demand. Of course, this also means the prices for originals increases as my career expands each year. Getting in on earlier work means you may be able to get a better price than waiting over the course of time, thus allowing you to snag a true jewel that will be worth so much more as time goes on.

Prints on Canvas offer a wonderful option for the collector who isn’t aserious art investor/collector. My giclee prints on canvas are archival for100 years and are color corrected to be as vibrant as the original. We use avery reputable printer, who prints each giclee individually instead of “massproducing”. The prints are on stretcher bars, so the appearance is one that looks just like an original painting on canvas. Each print on canvas is sealed with a sealant to protect the giclee. Another added value of purchasing a print on canvas as while they look just like an original, the cost is much more affordable. This allows my collectors to be able to start a collection of my work, and purchase several of their favorites to quickly amass a grouping.

If you just love my art for the art’s sake, this is a great way to go. I personally can not distinguish between the original and a print on canvas from across the room.

Remarquing takes a giclee to the next level, by having the artist actually hand embellish the print by painting on it. This adds originality, makes the giclee more unique and also enhances collectibility by having the artist place their “dna” on the piece making it more desirable. A good remarque also adds emphasis to the highlights of thework, further blurring the line between an original and a giclee.

All in all, the decision basically boils down to the collector. Many of my collectors only prefer to purchase originals simply because they desire to have an original painting. Others enjoy collecting prints on canvas due to the affordability . The bottom line is it really just depends on what youwant, both are a great option.

My new Baby Chihuahua

Here's a quick photo of new little baby. She's a real cutie but quite a handful . Lexie Lulu Maria is spunky, sweet and spicey all rolled into one. She has our hearts wrapped around her little paws . It's been so great to have such a healthy pup. She loves to snuggle while I am doing computer work, on the couch or anytime she can get someone to pick her up. I've jokingly told my hubby I need to get a baby-sling so I can get some work done. I do hope she settles into not wanting to be held while I am in the studio. I find it a tad hard to hold a paint brush in one hand, and the chi in the other arm. It leaves no place for me to put the palette!

I'm apart of a new artist collective that will be launching very soon. Once it's ok to give the go ahead I'll tell you all about it.

But I knew you all wanted to see pics of the newest baby here.. isn't she a cutie!

Hilton in New Orleans Decorating with my art

I am excited to inform you that my art print " New Orleans Night Light" has been chosen to grace the rooms in the newly remodeled Hilton St.Charles. This is a wonderful opportunity for me to broaden my realm of influence artisticly. For my collectors, my art going more " mainstream" only adds additional value to the work they own.

For me on a personal note, I see this as a dream come true. I've worked very hard over the last 10 years trying to be successful with my art. At times it has seemed that I was the only one that believed in myself. Somehow I managed to stick it out and now it is paying off. I have lots of anticipation for 2007. Suceeding as an artist is very difficult but one of the most fulfilling careers.

For all my collectors, be watching for a by invitation only sale on my prints on canvas. They look incredible .

Back from Paradise

We just got back yesterday from a weeks stay in Cozumel. I wanted to surprise my hubby with a getaway for his birthday. The weather was gorgeous for most of the week. Cozumel is a wonderful place to ge if you love sun, water and being able to do nothing if you so choose. We stayed at Allegro Resort. The staff there is the most hospitable and warm group of people. The water is beautiful, the food ain't bad, and the snorkeling is phenomenal. We did a trip to Palancar, Columbia and " Hollywood " reefs and had a great time although the water was a bit choppy and that made it a bit more strenous. It was nice to take a break after such a busy time before Christmas.

Needless to say I am excited about some great new opportunities I'll be sharing with you in the near future. Just wanted to check in quickly to say I am back and I'll have new works up for all to see soon.

I'll post more photos of Cozumel once I get them uploaded and tweaked so you can enjoy the beauty even if it's just by photo.

Talk about heartbreak! Never buy a pet on a whim

Our whole household has been grieving since Saturday night. We had a chance to fall in love the day before Thanksgiving.

My 2 teenage daughters saw a person selling puppies on the side of the road, and begged me to stop. Well, having 2 teenagers putting the pressure on- and my admitted dog fanaticism, of course I succumbed to peer pressure. We didn't know what was about to unfold but needless to say it was love at first sight. It took a little over an hour to convince my hubby, but he gave in as well. Our whole family has wanted a teacup chihuahua for quite some time now.

It was a very rash, quick decision. I had an uneasy feeling about committing the cardinal no-no of dog shopping: NEVER BUY A DOG ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I should have also suspected something when after the person was given the check I was told, oh by the way don't take the dog to the vet for a while because it is very susceptible to parvo and could get sick. A little alarm went off in my head, but being in the state of puppy love as I was I soon forgot it.

Tinkerbell was a doll, but after 24 hours we noticed she wasn't eating so well. Not to mention a runny stool, but I accounted that to stress from the change in ownership. We were so happy with her, and she was a perfect little lady. I even spent a whole evening making her puppy clothes because we couldn't find a sweater small enough for her and noticed she was very listless and cold.

After 2 days we were at the emergency after hours animal clinic at 11pm because Tink wouldn't eat and had started excreting a horrifying puddle of blood when she went potty. Heartbroken and scared we took her to the vet-- who immediately asked who we had bought the puppy from and told me that I had been sold a very sick dog. She had lost alot of weight and her temp was way below normal.

The vet was incredibly kind and good to our teary eyed possee of girls. She immediately went to bat for us and called the breeder , who she knew and told her the only moral thing to do was to take this dog back because her medical needs were going to be extensive. I honestly think the vet knew that Tink was very ill and didn't want our family to watch her suffer. I have lost one pet before 18 years earlier to parvo and it is a horrifficly brutal virus .

Our hearts were torn but as a family we decided that we couldn't risk taking Tink back into the home with our 2 other family pets. So we called the breeder who immediately started back peddling and giving me a hard time. Needless to say it was very ugly and hurtful to be accused of making this dog ill or being neglectful. The only thing the breeder would offer was another pup, which was out of the question because 2 heartbreaks can not be endured so close together. It then became an all out fight of name calling etc. because I told her if she took the pet back, she had a moral obligation to refund my money so I could find a healthy pet for my oldest daughters birthday which was the following day.

She agreed to take the pet back, but would not hear of returning my money. The vet had called her and told her the incubation period for parvo is between 8-14 days and there was no possible way the virus had been contracted while the dog was under our care. Unfortunately I had to stop payment on my check because this breeder is nothing more than a backwoods Cruella Deville without a heart or concious. The most heartbreaking part of it all wasn't the fact we were so sad, but that Tink was ill and we had no choice but to let her leave our hands.

Here are some very important things I learned from this experience:

1. Never ever buy a pet from a person who is not willing to allow you to see the environment the dog is raised in-- Cruella insisted we met her at a half-way point instead of me taking the pup back to her kennels. Looking back, I now know why.

2. Find a reputable breeder who offers a bill of health guarantee covering genetic defects, parvo and COCCIDA, as well as corona. You need to insist on a 10-14 day money refundable parvo/coccida health guarantee. Most breeders don't want to give you that kind of guarantee- to which you need to ask if you have a clean, healthy environment -- then why not? Call your local vets/obedience schools for recommendations.

3. Find a breeder who only sales 1-2 breeds max- if they carry multiple breeds then most are only in it for the money which usually isn't indicative of a great puppy raising environment. Cruella and her wicked assisstant had a smorgasbord of pets, chihuahuas, yorkies, bostons, schnauzers, jack russells, something shi-poos, and poodles, shitzus--you name it she had it.

4. Avoid buying a puppy from a pet store. Too often these puppies come from "puppy mills". If you don't know what a puppy mill is, look up the term "puppy mill" on the Internet or call your local animal shelter. The only way to stop puppy mills is to stop buying puppies from pet stores. This does not include those pet stores that have shelter puppies available for adoption.

5. The breeder should ask you questions before they agree to sell you a puppy. Such as: Do you have time to care for a puppy properly? Can you afford feeding/grooming costs? Where will the puppy live (indoors/outdoors)? Why do you want a puppy? Do you have children?

6. Ask the breeder; How many litters do you have a year? Breeders producing more than 1 or 2 litters a year are probably not paying enough attention to the genetics and health of the puppies.

7. Ask the breeder; Where were the puppies raised? How have you socialized them? What you're looking for here is an indication of what kind of socialization the puppies have had. Socialization is so important to getting a well-adjusted, well-mannered dog. Puppies should have been exposed to people, other dogs, new situations, normal household sounds and activities in order to learn. A puppy raised without this important social interaction can be shy, fearful, aggressive, or have other problems as they get older. Dogs need to know how to play, how to handle new situations, how to relate to people.

8. Ask the breeder; When can I take the puppy home? Puppies usually go home between 8 and 12 weeks. Avoid anyone sending tiny puppies home.

Fortunately, my family and I are healing. We have learned a very hard, heartbreaking lesson. We have disinfected our house and are now on the waiting list for another puppy from a lady who raises 1-2 litters a year and keeps the pups indoors with her. She has agreed to hold the puppy extra time for it's series of vaccinations to be in place with a complete parvo series before we bring the puppy into our home.

Oh, and if you live in north Louisiana and are considering a chihuahua email me and I'll give you Cruellas real name--she lives in the Luna area. Unfortunately one of the "posh" pet boutiques in Monroe brings her in a few times a month to sale pets to unsuspecting buyers and she also sets up in West Monroe in commercial parking lots. Beware!!!

I donated a chair for the northeast Louisiana Children's museum in October. The event was to raise support for the costs of operation. It was a fun project, but next time I think we'll go for something else, anything but a rocking chair!

It's a really simple process, first you prime the raw wood furniture with 3 coats of gray spray paint primer, then paint your base coat colors 3 coats so it is not splottchy, then you begin to freehand your designs. I must admit I did use a sharpie to detail some outlines, as it became a little tedious. Then once all the freehand artwork is dry, you simply seal with 3-5 coats of clear laquer sealant. I used a spray. It only took 14 hours worth of painting, not including the drying time between coats. But whoever purchased this chair will definitely have a one of a kind,
and you know it is going to be worth millions one day! ;)

Next year, I think I'll paint a footstool! Ha!

The last one was helping the bricklayers in our neighborhood by ingesting mortar.. not so happy ending but fortunately he has an iron constitution and no permanent damage. Thank Goodness. Things here have been busy. I've been working on a few projects and have had several commissions come in. Tomorrow I'll spend the day in the studio working. I am wanting to have a paint-a-thon so I can do a special collectors sale in the next few days.

We have been enjoying the rain for the last 24 hours or so- it's been so hot and dry we needed it. I went and had a nice lunch with my Mom today, we really enjoyed the visit. Then I went snooping in the artsy area of town looking for studio space. It seems I am just getting more cramped in my present situation. Hopefully we will find a solution before long.

Have you seen Lady in the Water yet? It's a very interesting movie. I enjoyed it immensely but my family totally missed the point. The plot is a deep one..

Well got to get some rest so I'll be fresh for painting tomorrow.

Quarter restaurant-updates and louisiana weather

Quarter restaurant of Las Vegas will be opening this weekend and I am excited to announce that 14 of my prints in a 18x24 size will be gracing the walls. This is a chain so I have been told that there are plans for opening at least a dozen this year. That means my art will be dispersed in several locations throughout the US. I look forward to working with the management and art director in the future. As usual with any new project, there were a few glitches but that is to be expected when working cross-country via various means of communication. Now I'll have to plan a trip out to Vegas to see it all myself. I should have photos soon to post.

I am working on having a series of new orleans posters made soon that should make my art prints in a price range that is easily affordable to everyone. I've been working steadily for the last week preparing art proofs and getting the preliminary print files together. The poster option will be hosted by the largest online art company and is really exciting for me..more on that soon. Hopefully I'll begin to have royalties coming in monthly from the sale of the posters. Residual income has been a goal I have been striving to meet with my art, but takes alot of planning and research to be successful.

I've just recently been learing about vblogging and video production as well--soon I'll have video clips from the studio so you can see how works progress over a period of time. The next series of paintings will be called the Faces of the JAZZ GREATS. I am looking forward to getting back to some extended painting time soon.

On a personal note, the dog days of summer are upon us and it is hot as a six shooter here. I wish we had a pool so I could relax a bit on down days..maybe that residual income will help go towards the pool kitty.

Random act of kindness needed! weekend update

Things have been great here. I spent the weekend renovating the studio.After a quick run to Targ`et for storage stuff, we are on our way to a more organized studio existence. I will be launching out into my abstract works once again soon. I'll post more about them later. I love abstraction and have missed it so much! Antebellum Anniversary

I've been busy this week..Tuesday my husband and I celebrated our 19th year anniversary. Seems like just yesterday. To my surprise, he had arranged a secret over night get away to Vicksburg. I love historical towns-- they inspire me. We stayed at the Cedar Grove Inn
an antebellum plantation. You can actually see a cannon ball stuck in the wall shot into the home by the Yankees.

My hubby Joel is so wonderful. I feel so fortunate to have married my soulmate. We have been through alot but it has been worth the few ups and downs. He is my rock and my best friend. Joel I love you more today than I did 19 years ago.

I've been working on a new painting in progress.. I'll post tomorrow.

Latest project now completed

I recently had the honor of working on a stage / lighting project. Basically we worked as a team to add lighting elements and art to modernize the stage at Life Church West Monroe.
Here is a look at the completed project, along with the 7 large abstracts I painted.
It was alot of work, but alot of fun as well.

Right now we are working on several projects that could be large scale. Negotiations are under way. I'll keep you posted once we have some ends tied up.

Boston baby

It has been a busy but good weekend. We went to see Posiedon with some good friends Friday night. It was nerve wracking, but semi ok I guess. I enjoyed the adrenaline rush but it didn't have much plot. This morning my Aunt and Uncle invited the whole family over for brunch. What a spread! She cooked everything from texmex omeletes, to waffles, biscuits, pototoes, bacon sausage... anyway it was great. We always enjoy our time with them.

Then on to a baby shower for a dear friend who just adopted a newborn, then found out within 2 months she was pregnant! So her babies will be 10 months apart. I think that is so cool!. Then on to our 30 somethings group scavenger hunt. I was the reigning queen from last years event, but unfortunately got dethroned. We came in 2nd place this year. I'll have to set my eyes on the gold for next year.. you had better watch out. Yes, you-- you know who you are! Lol.

So today I started checking my stats on my blog. I was amazed to see I am getting tons of hits from the photos of my dogs. So you get to see my big baby, and my boston baby. They love each other. Boudreaux is getting old- all he wants to do is eat and sleep. I must be getting older myself.

Well I've got to do 7 larger abstracts this week so I'll be extremely busy.

It's been a while since I've updated so I thought I'd sneak back in here and get my blog active again. Just haven't been much in the mood to write alot lately. On a personal note, things are going well. I've been consumed with my new makeup business. I guess most artist are always getting into something new from time to time. Mineral makeup is wonderful, and besides creating a cosmetic line is so exciting! (whatever!)

I plan on working on that today after I return from translating. For those of you who didn't know, I lived in Mexico for 7 years and am fluent in Spanish. So I translate for our local court system. Geez, I guess I am just so multi-faceted!

Customized Pet Portraits that are true works of art

I finished another digital painting last night. I am so excited about being able to do this type of work. It really broadens my horizons for expressing myself in so many ways. Take a look at the examples and the finished product.

Boston Terrier portraits are coming my way, as well as many other works. I have a commission for a beautiful kitty named T-Bird as well as several other furry friends I'm working with. I've been working on my digital art skills. Here is custom pet portrait I just completed of my Boston Terrier, Boudreaux. Here is the reference photo I worked from, as well as the completed piece. Crawfish Fettucini

I'm pondering the infinite question once again, "What will I fix for supper?" Well, I've got to run into the store, so I was surfing the net for a few good ideas. This one seems to fill the bill for sure.

Crawfish Andouille Fettuccini
Prep Time: 45 MinutesYields: 6 Servings
Comment:
Probably the two ingredients most associated with Louisiana cooking, crawfish and andouille, come together in this wonderful pasta dish. The light, smoky flavor of andouille adds the perfect touch to the fettuccini

Ingredients:
2 pounds crawfish tails, cooked
½ cup diced andouille sausage
1 pound fettuccini noodles, cooked
¼ pound butter
2 tbsps chopped garlic
½ cup diced onions
¼ cup diced celery
¼ cup diced red bell peppers
¼ cup diced green bell peppers
1 cup sliced mushrooms
½ cup diced tomatoes
¾ cup flour
1 quart crawfish stock or 1 quart water seasoned with chicken bouillon
¼ cup dry white wine
1 tbsp lemon juice
¼ cup tomato sauce
1½ cups heavy whipping cream
1 tsp chopped basil
1 tsp chopped tarragon
2 tbsps chopped parsley
¼ cup sliced green onions
salt and black pepper to taste
Method:In a heavy-bottomed 3½-quart saucepan, melt butter over medium-high heat. Add garlic, onions, celery, bell peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes and andouille. Sauté for 5 minutes or until vegetables are wilted. Sprinkle in flour and blend well. Whisk in crawfish stock, white wine, lemon juice and tomato sauce. Whisk well until all is blended. Bring to a simmer and hold for 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Add crawfish tails and cream. Return to simmer and cook 10 minutes. Add basil, tarragon, parsley and green onions. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Remove from heat and toss with pasta.

I'll just add my very own Angel touches to this one and it should make for a fantastic dinner with a green salad, and some whole wheat french bread.

Here's how I do a "speed up" on this long prep recipe! I learned early on in marriage-sometimes when you are under a time crunch you've got to look for a shortcut or two.

I'll omit the wine, mushrooms and tomatoes. Instead of the fresh veggies I may just opt for a package or two of seasoning blend found in the freezer aisle. I use PictSweet brand. It works out fine especially if you hate chopping as much as I do. I'll opt to not use the tomatoes or the tomatoe sauce and just throw in a small can of rotel, drained. Use the chicken bouillon in water instead of the crawfish stock( the sprinkle bouillon is great or remember 1 cube per cup) I always keep a jar of minced garlic in the fridge, so that cuts down on prep as well. I'll also add some grated Parmesan and Asiago cheese I keep on hand to the final sauce. A small block of velveta would push this over the top, but might not help if you are watching your diet. I'll use whole wheat fettucini instead of regular for a healthier option. Also if you not so crazy about crawfish you could throw in cubed chicken breasts and it would still be great.

While I am making the sauce I'll start the water to boiling, get the salad open and into the bowl so it can chill. As the sauce finishes up the girls will help me get the table set and were off to an easier night without so much work.

Also if you unload the dishes before you start cooking , just rinse and load directly into the dishwasher instead of throwing things into the sink while you are cooking. It takes sometime to form a habit of doing that but it really cuts down on clean up afterwards.

I've been busy working on lots of little details with my art. I"ve taken a semi-sabbatical to refuel after my sickness a few weeks ago. Glad to report back that I am now able to get back into the studio comfortably without much pain as a side effect. The creative process comes in such and ebb and flow that at times it seems to make me unbearable. I wish I possessed more of an ability to focus and stay on task. I guess that is part of what makes me who I am though. I should be releasing my fine art prints on canvas within a few days. The quality of these giclees are phenomenal. I'm still feeling horrible. I think it must be the Cipro the Dr. put me on. I can't hardly stay up on my feet for more than 30 mins without feeling dizzy, weak and like I am going to throw up. The joys of femininity

Well life the last few days here has been a real pain. It's been excruciatingly busy over the weekend. I finally got the huge birthday party for my girls planned, and excecuted. We did an amazing Race theme, with a scavenger hunt/race type 2 1/2 hour competetion. It took alot of work, and the kids all enjoyed it. We had 24 people racing and they all seemed to enjoy it. I have felt so odd all week, not exactly ill, but not well either. Then it hit around 3:30 Thursday afternoon. The dreaded UTI- I waited about an hour then headed in. There has to be nothing more miserable than that. So the Dr. put me on Cipro--which makes me feel so out of it. Then it is was off to get that party planned. Quite busy over the weekend. It was an exhaustive mindbending task, but it is one I hope the girls remember forever. My favorite part was boiling up the chicken feet for the oink / cluck challenge!
The kids had to transfer pickled pigs lips or chicken feet from one containter to another. It was gross!!!

Anyway, I have had my fill of cranberry juice for awhile. I don't think I could drink much more. It's really good for you though. Here is a little cranberry juice recipe that helped me get more of it down. The taste is ununusually addicting:
1/2 glass Northland Cranberry Juice (not the cranberry cocktail stuff, although it will work in a pinch)
1/2 glass Diet 7-up
1/2 green lime, squeezed into a glass.
Mix it all up and it tastes wonderful..very tart.

Well, I hope to be updating my website this week. I am trying to make a definitive decision on my new company and whether or not I should start it.

Today has been an official flop day---I so needed it. I'll go fix dinner then we will watch a movie or something.
Some days you just need to do nothing. Hopefully the rest will benefit my body.

Some days I just hate technology

Ugh!
This face lift is painful. I've spent way too much time today trying to figure this all out. I can't stand leaving things not right. I can't figure out why my images can't be seen from my new hosting company. Not coool and I am getting more frustrated by the minute..

ugggghhhhhh. Not to mention I have to totally relearn all the software to update my site now. Not good. I may have to back out with that 30 day moneyback guarantee if I can't get it together.

Working on a face lift for my blog

It's been a while since I posted. I am working on so many projects that I can't keep up with everything. Switching hosting companies for my sites, trying to update pages , catch up on orders. Then also my new business passion for my new cosmetic line and store are also consuming me. I've got to get in the studio today and finish up a special rush order so it will be on time. It's tough when people want handpainted originals on a 10 day timeline. I think this will be the last one I do, it's just too stressful. Can I get it done,yes of course. But it feels too much like work, and that just causes a strain on my artistic inspiration.
Stay tuned to see what is up with the blog..maybe I can get it all worked out here in a bit.

I thought I'd send out a quick New Years Wish for everyone. I've enjoyed my break and I am ready to get back to work. I've got alot of goals for 2006. Looking back on 2005, it's been a great year. Many goals were achieved, and some I still need to work on this year. My art career is beginning to really develop and I need to work and focus my attention on expanding my business. You'll be hearing more from me in the near future.
My wish for you is that this year is the best you've yet to live, your heart is happy and your home blessed!
Now, I am off to ring in the New Year with my beautiful bald boyfriend and my two gorgeous daughters!!!

Art Show in Philadelphia thoughts and memories

We were at our spot around 20 til 6 and as soon as the doors opened we were busy until after 12 am. It was so much fun and everyone was so nice and welcoming. I enjoyed meeting Al and Loralee West. Mr. West is president of SEI, and is so down to earth and enjoyable. You can learn more about SEI here

I took 8 original paintings, a fine art giclee on canvas and had several prints available. Within just a few hours all the originals were sold and the prints were moving as well. Over all it was a fantastic experience and a great success. I do believe the ability to help with hurricane relief from this event will have an impact and be such a help to those in the affected regions.

Mr. West made a presentation and presented Chef Leon West, a representative from Whitney Bank and I. I had been told I could ease by without having to say anything but that didn't happen!! I managed to mumble something without fainting in front of 1600 people. Fortunately for me the lights were so bright I couldn't really see anyone out there!

It's Showtime Baby!

I woke up early Saturday with a very nervous stomach, and Joel slept in so I tried to be quiet and let him sleep. We had so much to get done, and setup ended up being a bit more than we expected. Fortunately Denise recommended Maggiano's restaurant and we took her advice. The food was fantastic.
Here are a few photos of the setting up of our booth area.
It was surreal to see the way the whole event was designed around my artwork and was a really exciting feeling to know that so much could transpire out of a painting.
The theme for the event was Celebrate and Rejuvenate, and everything had a New Orleans flair to it. The music was provided by the Jazz Vipers and Kool and the Gang.
Unfortunately I didn't get much of a break to enjoy the music because my table was full the whole duration of the event. No complaints about that here!! We had to rush back to the room around 4 to get all dressed up for the event. Ironing was a challenge but we made it!!!

Friday Night Contemplations

Upon returning to our hotel I realized just how wonderful it is to be an American and to have the freedoms we so often take for granted. Our country is a wonderful place and we must preserve the freedom our forefathers gave their lives for.

We went down to the lobby and worked for several hours on show details that had been undone before we left. The Christmas atmosphere made for a nice environment. I found the beautiful little village scene especially mesmerizing and had a hard time being distracted by the little skier!

Joel tried very hard to keep me busy so I wouldn't be thinking of all that was transpiring back home. Emotionally I was a wreck as I knew my grandmother's funeral was today and my mom and girls all needed me. It was extremely difficult to have to be gone during such a difficult time. I was so glad I had spent time with my grandmother and that she had voiced her love for me many times over the last 10 days.
Ila Mae Thompson was an incredible woman and she will be missed dearly. I hope I never have to be in a situation like this one again, as it was a bittersweet trip. I know Grandma would have wanted me to make my trip, and to fulfill my contract with SEI. I pray I made her proud and felt like she was looking down from heaven with a smile as I presented my art.

We ended up staying up late drinking Starbucks and working in the FEDex center until around 1 am so we could be a bit more relaxed Saturday as we had to set up.

Liberty Bell and Independence Hall

After seeing the convention center we decided to be tourists and head over to the Liberty Bell. Fortunately for us it was a 6 minute walk from the Marriott. The 6 minute walk took us about 36 minutes to complete. I am still trying to understand that one, I am not sure if we walk slow in Louisiana or if the cold slowed us down. It was worth the trip to see this historical piece of Americana though. Here are a few photos of I took as we spent the evening in the historical zone of Philly. My love for photography took over at some point and I forgot the cold and enjoyed myself!

Highlights from my Philly Trip!

That's City Hall in Philadelphia. The building was highlighted with a digital lighting for Christmas! See it here! I loved sneaking a mesmerizing glance each time we past the building or went up to our 19th floor room where I could get a wonderful view. The colors were so hypnotic!

We also met with Denise, Karyn and Debbie from SEI Corporate Events planning team after lunch on Friday to view the convention center room and the decorations. The team did such a great job pulling together the event, and the use of my art in decorations, banners, print material and on the big screens made me grin ear to ear everytime I saw something new. Here are a few of the preliminary photos of the the ballroom area. The event team made us feel so welcome that after a few minutes we all felt like old friends. Denise handled each detail with such ease and professionalism.

Back from Art Trip to Philadelphia! Philly Cheese steaks

I had the best time in Philadelphia for my trip to the SEI Holiday Christmas Event.
We arrived in Philly on Thursday and returned home Sunday morning. I thought it would be cool to do a day by day chronological photo blogging attempt so you can capture the essence of our trip. We left the Monroe airport around 6 am Thursday, and made it into Philly around 12 pm so it was a nice little flight. We stayed at the Marriott adjacent to the Philadelphia Convention Center. Our first outting we went across the street to Reading Market where you can find any and everything to eat. Here's what we chose! Ricks Philly Steaks!!! As you can see, my very handsome manager was quite happy to experience the original Philly Cheese steak. It was great!

The temp was around 14 degrees when we landed, and snow was still on the ground. Over the next day or so it warmed up! (yeah!!!!) So it wasn't too bad. We did a bit of shopping at the Gallery as I had a shoe misfortune and needed to find something comfy because I never expected to be walking so much!!!
We walked forever it seemed in the Gallery, which is nothing at all like what we have here locally. My daughters would have loved the place. The manager however did NOT, since we seemed to spend more time there than expected. The first 24 hours I basically rested because I was so tired from all that had transpired before we left, with my grandmothers illness and passing, and preparations with prints etc. The last minute details were brutal, and I went to bed around 2 am then got up at 4 am to catch the flight. A nap was the highlight of Thursday!

Update--Art show details and Christmas plans

It's been a mad dash to the finish line with preparations for my upcoming art show in Philadelphia. Prints are finalized, paintings shipped, visa machine in and so many more little details that had to be completed before we left. I will be up late tonight working on one last order to be filled before we leave Thursday.

I think my body is trying to tell me something, I ended up back at the Dr. Friday. Hopefully I'll get some rest soon. The New Year will bring some well needed changes in respect to our lifestyle.

My beautiful Grandmother has been in the hospital for the last week or so. She is so wonderful, we've been trying to spend as much time with her as possible. You can't take life for granted. It is a gift to be treasured. Don't wait until it's to late to share your love with those around you.

I've got to get ready to head into the mall to help my hubby find a suit for our event. Isnt' he the cutest? Joel has been so supportive of my art career, I couldn't have ever gotten this far without his love and support.

Sorry for the long lapses in posting but time has been of the essence so I've had to make a push to get focused and complete the tasks at hand.

We finally made it home! Seems like it was a long trip. I think I am getting a bit more "americanized" than I want to admit. We really enjoyed our week in Mexico to serve our friends and spend time with friends we haven't seen in years. The first picture is on the plane, with my daughter who celebrated her 16th birthday on the way back home! Nothing like a trip to a celebrate 16. This wasn't your normal "Mexico" trip tho, and she ended up at some really remote clinics getting Rociphen shots for a bacterial gastro infection. Yuck! She was really brave though.
My other daughter did great as well, and was a true trooper. We got to do some wonderful site seeing in the beautiful state of Chiapas, I'll be adding more photos later. Those are the Mayan ruins in Palenque. Quite impressive--I love archaelogy, but seems as if the rest of my family doesn't share my passion. Hmm-

The last few days have been awful. Hubby came back with strep, loads of dirty clothes and I feel the pressure of the coming Holidays upon me. I must get all the details finished for the show with SEI in Philly asap, and need to get busy. We did get our Christmas tree up finally, and it looks nice! I'll have to show you our wonderful zebra ornaments-they turned out cool!
Well, I've got to get some sleep as the exhaustion point has been exceeded hours ago.

Sorry for the delay in my blogging. It has been an incredibly insane week or so here. My youngest daughter came down with acute tonsilitis last weekend, and was so ill. Then my oldest burnt her arm last week cooking, and I ended up with the throat stuff as well. Results were 3 doctors visits and a huge bill at the pharmacy. The events of last weekend were crammed packed with birthday parties, and different functions.Needless to say, being pumped up on high dosage antibiotics and the strangest decongestant I've ever taken made me all the more pleasant to be with during my "medicated" stint. The polyvent the Dr. gave me made me feel like an alien was sucking the life force out of my lungs during the night and I would wake up around 3 am feeling like I had no fluid in my body at all--almost dehydrated and painful to breathe...I hate medicine!!!!!

I've been trying to get caught up on my commissions before Christmas. The two paintings above were the last on my list! I'll be off to Fedex in a bit to ship them out. Now I can focus on my art show in Philly--although the parameters seem to be changing and now I have no clue as to what I should take--I spent the whole day at the mall looking for a "cocktail" dress and low and behold our sweet po dump town has nothing suitable for such an occassion! UGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH--another snag in my plan before we leave. So now unless I get lucky I'll have to travel for 1-2 hours to a larger city and see if I can find something appropriate.

On a family note my poor hubby has had his own load of insanity with his work as of late and has made huge attempts to remain unstressed--but the kids sense something and it's been a tough one. We are leaving tomorrow for an 8 day missions trip to Mexico to see old friends and cook thanksgiving dinner for missionary friends. I hope this will be a good relaxing trip as we all need it. But before we go it's utter choas, getting all the details of his job, my job, the house, the dogs etc all ready to go!!! I wish we could detour for around 3-4 days and head down to Cozumel just to bum. Not happening! Wish me luck at getting the cranberry sauce into Mexico intact without being confiscated. Since 9-11 it's just really hard to take anything on an airline..I feel for those who work in the industry--it's got to be tough.

Well.. I won't be blogging for a week or so, so I thought I'd update quickly just so people will know that the madness still exists around here-I've just been so busy I haven't had time to share it.

Oh--and the makeup company is doing great. People are wanting the product so hopefully after the Christmas the big launch will take off well.

Lazy Sunday afternoon

Well, it has been a lazy Sunday afternoon. I cooked a big lunch today and we enjoyed our family time. Pork Loin, sausage, baked sweet potatoes, and turnip greens for my honey (ick!!) rolls and sweet tea. Then we all took a long nap since most of the family hasn't felt well this weekend. My youngest has had tonsilitis, and we both ended up at the doctor. So, we are trying to recuperate. I'll need to get busy painting. On a good note, most of my commissions are caught up and I had a great response to my mini sale. I'll be preparing for our family vacation since we are leaving Friday! Yeah!!! More later just wanted to touch base.

I've been busy as usual. I had all intentions in the world yesterday of getting some painting done, but as of yet I still haven't gotten to work on the pieces I need for my big showing in Philly. I did get alot of legwork done yesterday. There are so many details to settle, I need a full time manager to get the loose ends tied up.
I designed and ordered 2000 new business cards, found a place that can get me envelopes and backings for the prints, tried to no avail to get the bank to get me the info on the visa setup, fielded several calls about lighting and finally got through to someone who could help. Sonya Paz is a phenomenal artist in Santa Clara, you really should check out her art. I love her use of color. She has been so helpful and supportive to give advice on the details of an art business. Surf on over and see her works.. you'll love them.

We went to our traditional Friday night football game last night, but it had been moved to Thursday. Yuck! Football Friday night is on Friday for a reason. No fun when you have to get up for work the next day. It was cold! Then on over to our local Mexican haunt, those guys will be able to retire early off of us!

The compounding of the first batch of mineral makeup went extremely well. We are testing the wearability of our foundation, blush, eyeshadows and liners. So far the results have been much better than I anticipated. Hopefully I'll have the website and our products ready to launch right after the New Year. I just don't see how I can push the time frame up any closer with our family trip to Mexican for a week, then the Philadelphia trip.. So, I'll keep you posted as to the details.

Oh, and fortunately.. the fingernail polish situation was fixed!

I woke up this morning missing New Orleans, with the sun shining brightly in my window. It's been since June that I've walked the Quarter. I can tell you that today would be gorgeous down there. I've got a yearning for some jazz, and a bowl of gumbo. Or maybe a good shrimp poboy, then a beautiful moonlit stroll to for some beignets and cafe au lait. New Orleans, you'll rise again, better and stronger than before. I'll be back soon.

Today will be a great painting day, for it's been on these bitter sweet days when I wake up with an aching loss for N'awlins that I paint the best. I'll harness that sentiment and put it to work with some Aaron Neville and things just begin to flow out of my heart and from my brush.

Here's to a great day.. time to hit the shower and get ready for a great day of work. As chicken little says" Today is a new day!" Btw, go see it--it's sweet and the animation is incredible!!!

On another note, to all my friends who are in the insurance business--start cutting some checks for folks. It's ridiculous --honest hard working people that have never been a day late on their payments are still waiting without receiving a penny.

Maybe a nation wide "we won't pay anymore if you don't either attitude might be helpful???" I mean come on now!!

Chicken Little! I feel like the sky is falling!

This is my first and probably only chicken painting! Chickens just aren't my deal, but you know we had to commemorate the viewing of Chicken Little today. We went hog wild today, lunch, movies, and snowcaps! I guess I needed the break. My friend and I took her 2 little boys. I had as much fun watching their sweet little faces as I did the movie. It as cute though, and had a great moral. Making me want to get into animation when I watch kids movies.

I feel the stress of everything! I've got alot to get done, finding bags/packing/ getting the prints done, commissions finished. All the details, visa machine, and paintings ready for the show. I'll probably stop all orders from now until after Christmas to get ready-- which means I need to get the giclees on canvas finished.

But, all I can think about is my makeup company!!!!! I am super excited about this new venture, spending alot of time learning about it all. I really love it so far, and formulating is addictive.
More on all that later. Ok, well time to go pull a late night. I'm sorry that the quotes of the day have kind of dwindled down to nothing--so here is one for me that I consider motivation:

For those of you wondering what in the world has kept me from updating, well I've just been trying to get as much accomplished as possible lately. I've noticed I am picking up a few viewers from the Louisiana area that surf by on a regular basis.
That is cool--you could post a comment and say hi!;). The painting above has been chosen for the cover of the invitation to the art event. The theme is celebrate and rejuvenate--the most wonderful graphics team has gotten all the print material looking fantastic.I've been getting as much done as possible for my event in December. We have gotten most of the professional color corrected scans together for the printing of the run of prints, travel arrangements are being made, now we are on to the lighting issue, as well as packaging/displaying the originals. I've got 2 large originals finished--trying to decide how many to take. I've also been working on getting my giclee prints on mounted canvas available. Theser are going to be so neat! They are true pieces of art in themselves, and will be signed and number in runs of a limited amount. The gicless on canvas look so much like the original it is even hard for me to be able to tell from across the room. You can hang them on the wall just like an original painting, and the prices will be really great. So if you have wanted to purchase an original but couldn't afford it, now you can get the next best thing. I'll pop in with an annoucement when everything is running smoothly on my site.

I've also got to finish up a few commissions before we leave for our trip in a few weeks. Turning around yesterday, I realized the whole month of October flew by. I mean, honestly where did it go to? So I am on the downhill slide and need to be busy!

My daughters and I are also checking into the possibility of launching our own line of mineral makeup soon. I love it! So nice to be using something that is totally natural, feels wonderful and doesn't rag out your skin. So I've been frantic trying to decide the most important priorities first.!!! I've got to run into the booming metropolis of downtown to the post office in a bit so I'll cut it short for now...
By the way--it's going to be 77 here today-I guess we don't have winters anymore in Louisiana.

I've been working so much that my back is killing me. That is what happens when you are so caught up in your work that you forget to put on your shoes!! I painted for 6 hours straight yesterday barefoot. Then once I finally sat down, realized "I feel like I am dying!" Not so smart. I have been known to do dumber things at times.
Like one time, I sat in my paint. That was interesting.. the phone had rang so I ran to answer it, then thought I would take a break. I forgot I left my palette in my chair! Splat-- new trend in bodypainting. Anyway--it was funny. Atleast to me.

Yesterday was spent in a whirl of activity. I finished two paintings that were on a deadline for photo scans, business plans, filling out forms, emails back and forth. A little time spent on learning about more Google advertising, changing keywords and such. Now I need to rush into the studio and get 3 more finished so I can have good scans made to get the discount.

I've got my business plan in place and will soon be revamping my products and availability. Trying to move more into a main stream approach with my work, have more prints and giclees on canvas available so I can not work quite so hard. I've been lagging a bit!

OK, well off to snag a granola bar and a diet coke and into the studio. I'm trying to be better about my blog--updating takes time.

I've been out of touch lately, as I have been working on getting my contract finished. I'll be flying out to Philadelphia for a print signing mid December at a large corporate Christmas party. It's quite exciting for me, and I think it will be a wonderful event. Of course I'll be donating to the relief effort with a portion of the proceeds. So I am busy working creating originals to take with me for purchase as well as tweaking everything with my printer. I may have to slow down on orders from my site until things get a bit less hectic.

There is alot to be done, so much that I've had to focus all my efforts on getting all my work lined out and accomplished. Which explains my recent absence from my blog. I'll try to continue updating more in the future.

Interesting things are happening right now with my career. It is exciting, yet a bit scary stepping into a greater exposure and realm with my art. I am so happy, yet I must be courageous. I'll be able to share more openly when the last formalities are completed.

On another note, today is shipping day. I'm heading into town to finish that up, taking in 6 paintings leaving my hands going to there new homes. Saying goodbye to my works is always a bit strange, because I become so involved with each piece as I create it.

Over all, today is a good day! I've got to hurry up though, lots to be done.

That photo is my boston, at about 2 1/2 months old--he broke his little leg, and to me this symbolizes courage--he was so young, and such a baby, walking on that leg took alot of effort. Isn't he just pitiful!

My last few days have been very symbolic of the photo above. Peanut found a lizard between the screen and the window, and has been after him ever since. I had so many technical difficulties with my sale that were out of my control, my server crashed, files got deleted, then once everything seemed ok.. BAM! I was an artist, but had buried that dream under wanting the approval of others. It was in my early 30's that I realized I needed to go back to my childhood and find my dream. I remembered hours spent with notebook and paper, creating my own world of imagination and mystery. Recovering that sense of childhood as an adult was hard. I worked through an incredible amount of "baggage" to finally with God's help find healing and wholeness to pursue my dream. It takes much courage to follow your dream! Naysayers and dream killers abound-nurturers are few and far between! But it has been worth it. I guess the biggest joy of my being an artist is being able to bring a smile to someone, or convey joy that touches a life, lightens a burden and brings peace.

We got out into the fresh air last week and took a little road trip. It was fun, and we explored our country backroads. That is always helpful when you are dealing with block. I feel as if I am quickly descending upon a crossroads of sorts. I must chose a path to follow, and yet each time I contemplate the decisions to be made in my life concerning my art, I am yet more confused. The time has come for me to narrow my vision, to focus my creativity. I want to harness the ability to work within one genre so I can excell. I do so love the variety of art I have worked at creating up until this point. Yet I must commit to something, or stay where I am at. If I could find a mentor, it would be most helpful. This has been a strange journey, yet an exciting adventure. Full of ups and downs, ebbs and flows. Empty yet full, the creative spirit is a restless one. I never seem satisfied for long,and have a hard time following through with my plans. I need an organizer, and a motivator.
Artistic rants are purging for the soul-- so indulge me from time to time.

It's late, and I've got to start keeping better hours. I'm so tired most of the time. It's hard to get things accomplished with all the actitivty we have going on right now.

But tomorrow is a new day full of unique opportunities to explore the reality of tomorrow..

That would just about sum it all up for me as well. Why am I obsessed with painting? That I do not know. I just know that if I don't, I feel as if the very air I breathe is being taken from my lungs. It is my essence, my core, the very soul of my being to be a painter. Until I realized and accepted that, I was very uncomfortable with myself. Creatives are quirky, difficult and at time maddening to those around them. For which I offer no excuses, nor an apology. For I must be who I have been created to be, if I deny my artistic bent I then divorce myself. I feel as if I must paint on a daily basis, almost just like needing to eat--I need to paint.

Hence the frustration that mounts if painting is not done, the sadness, the struggle.
I do take days off--at times I procrastinate. Chasing the muse is a very fickle relationship, delicate at best. Yet rewarding.

I finally got a photo of the studio boys together.. they have been super rambunctious this week. Peanut ( yorkie) has gotten to be Mr. Vocal and barks all day long. It makes getting any work at all done. He loves especially to bark when I am on the phone, if it's business. I guess he feels like any noise might be a potential evildoer from the axis of terror, and he is superdog.

I am really pleased with the way it turned out. It has a really glowing quality to it, simplistic and free flowing. This style reminds me of a cross between Matisse, and Cezanne. I hope to be doing more of these kinds of works.

Well, it's Amazing Race Night, so I need to go get supper (Southern for dinner) done so we can spend some family time.

It's been a really hectic day today, working on print orders and such. UPS sent back my first order of prints, showing I signed off to refuse them because they were damaged. UGH>> the brown truck never came here!! Sometimes I just want to punch somebody. Fedex is so much better in my opinion. Now my clients will have to wait a bit longer. I think that is the most difficult part of art, constantly keeping yourself from getting comfortable with what is safe to you. For me safety is doing what I know I can do well, easily without having to involve my emotions in the creative process. If I don't intuit into what I am creating I feel like I have "ripped off" the work itself. That is why my art is so stormy at times, yet tranquil. I want people to be happy with the art, but at times you must create out of the blackness that surrounds you. It is then that you can truly create a work that can communicate to others.

It's too late to take a photo but I finished this great impressionistic still life painting tonight. I'll put up photos in the morning and see if someone would like to purchase it. I'll be trying a little experiment and see if anyone is interested in the ability to purchase art directly from my blogs. Christmas is coming.. and art makes a wonderful present for someone you love. I love to personalize a work's title. That is a neat touch.

So, I am working on some very impressionistic/french looking stills for a while. I just needed to do something different to keep my work interesting. Photos coming in the morning, I promise.. Till then sweet dreams!

Ok, here it goes for the third time to try and post this! Ugh.. I keep hitting the wrong button and navigating away from this site when I go to publish. Sometimes I make myself so mad.

If you want to keep up with me, sign up for my Feedburner feed. The link is right over there on the right. It's easy..and if you have any problems getting my feed, please let me know so I can fumble along and get it fixed. I have a slower learning curve.. but I am nice, so that's a plus!

I found this neat little thing so you can try your hand at creating a Pollock masterpiece..
Alot of my collectors love my emotive art, that is influenced by Pollock. It's not nearly as easy as it looks.. you can have a big mess of nothing if you aren't careful. Check out my emotive works on my website!

This is my most recent painting for my relief event. I've also been working on my typical New Orleans works. This painting is a combination of collage and poetry I composed a few days after the tragedy.

I find it reassuring that Van Gogh had to reassure himself of his talent from time to time. I'm no Vincent (yet! ) but I think all creatives struggle with the process from time to time. Boston Terrier and Yorkshire Artist Accomplices

I thought you might want to be introduced to the
incredible duo that keeps the studio run amuck.
Boudreaux, is the finest of all southern gentlemen. Always dressed to a tee in his tux and tails. Quite the little ham, and loves to help me in the studio. His major collaborations are from the melodic rhythm of him sleeping. From time to time, he'll roll on my reference photos under the easel.
Peanut, the Yorkie ragamuffin is another story. He participates quite frequently in the artistic process whole heartedly. He has been known to knock over my easel as well as jump into my lap, directly somersaulting into my paint palette. His last adventure left white paw prints on my drop cloth.
They keep me on my toes, but are my best critics.
They simply voice undying love and affection for their favorite artest- albiet by bribes of purple popsicles or a few chips.
I just love them. If humans could be as humane as animals the world would be a much better place. They never share my secrets and always think my newest work is the best. If I could just get them to sit still enough for a photo session. ...hmm, wonder how I can pull that off.
